AND THE TREE CAME TUMBLING DOWN…

Our family went to get our live tree last night at Berry Patch Farms.  It was SO COLD.  I didn’t realize just how cold it was, therefore we weren’t exactly dressed appropriately. (The other family riding with us had on their perfect winter coats with matching gloves, ear muffs, etc…oh well.)  We rode on a trailer and a tractor pulled us to the tree farm. Molly snuggled up with Josh and said, “Daddy, even my eyes are cold.”  Now that is cold.  Last year Molly did not like all the noise from the tractor and cried just about the whole time we were on our tree adventure.  This year, she said, “I AM NOT SCARED, DADDY!!!  I LIKE THE TRACTOR.”  We were glad she enjoyed herself so much.  Mack loved the tractor and wanted to be ON the tractor instead of riding behind it.  As we were riding, Molly saw the house that you can go in to get hot chocolate or warm up by a fire.  She remembered everything from last year…”remember the fire and the dog that was asleep?”  It is scary how much she remembers.

The night was fun…we got home, ate chili and rice, then started decorating the tree.  I bought these red and white candy-looking things to stick in the tree.  Ruby called them “lollies.”  Mack tried to eat them.  It was Molly’s turn to put the angel on the tree.  She had been very excited about it until the actual time came to put on the angel.  She screamed with fear, so Josh ended up putting the angel on top of the tree.  The whole time we were trying to decorate the tree, Mack was into EVERYTHING.  I mean, he would not be still.  We ended up trapping him in his highchair so that we could get something done.  We made cookies and listened to Christmas music…and overall just had a great evening getting our house ready for Christmas.

THEN CAME THE MORNING….I was prepared to train Mack not to touch the tree.  I was going to show it to him and tell him not to touch.  I pinched his chubby hand when he touched anyway…we did this several times and then he walked away to play.  He played great and didn’t touch the tree.  I left the room and then checked in on him, and he didn’t touch the tree.  What a good boy!!!!  Then, I was in the office on the phone waiting to talk to someone from our new mortgage company.  I was on hold, so I decided to start cleaning up the desk.  Then, after about 10 minutes, someone answered only to tell me that they could tell me nothing because I am not Josh.  Lovely…then, two seconds later I hear a CRASH.  It sounded horrible.  I went into the living room to see my newly decorated tree flat on the floor.  Mack was just standing there with one of my “lollies” in his hand.  No tears, no fear, no “uh-oh” look on his face…just standing there as if nothing had happened!!!  I sent everyone out of the room so that I wouldn’t throw a certain someone out the window, and I tried to stand the tree up.  It wouldn’t balance at first, so after much struggle, I got the stupid tree up.  It didn’t look quite as fresh and cute as it had the night before.  We never had to worry about Ruby or Molly pulling our tree down to the ground….boys are so different and so destructive.  I got the girls a stick-on-the-window manger scene…the kind that sticks on and pulls off over and over…well, when Mack gets ahold of any piece of it, he balls it up in his fist.  Goodness gracious.

I hope we survive the holidays without our tree being pulled down again.  That would be real nice.

  1. Oh, no! I HOPE it’s the last crash. Josh had already mentioned how much Mack loved to get up close and personal with the Christmas tree. As fast as he is, all I can offer you is a great big, GOOD LUCK! Debbie

  2. i am cracking up at molly’s outfit….fleece pullover, hot pink panties (on her HINEY) and flip flops…my kinda girl 🙂

  3. Oh I can’t believe you didn’t get a picture of the tree laying flat on your floor, completely decorated!! Yes, as a mother of THREE boys, I can tell you, boys are definitely a DIFFERENT breed. However, a girl would never be content to play with a stick in the mud all afternoon, and that can be quite handy! Also, potty training was a breeze because we lived in the country and it was summer time… 🙂 Yep, they watered the plants and trees all summer long!
My seventeen month old was quite fascinated with out tree as well, especially since it took us almost three days to finally decorate it. Every morning for three days, he would drag his blanket into the office and lay UNDER the tree for the longest time. I thought it was pretty strange, so of course I took pictures. 🙂 You’ll never be bored for as long as you have that little man in your house. 🙂
